The Veterans Advantage or the GI Bill provides that both the veterans and active soldiers can avail educational benefits in participating educational institutions including online schools. There are two versions of the GI Bill and the recipients are allowed to decide which version will provide for their particular needs and eligibility.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has two main functions as mandated by the GI Bill to wit:
a) Provides for the different remuneration for those who served in the country’s armed forces, and
b) Administers the post-9/11 GI Bill for veterans’ educational program.
Those who suffered disability while in the active service and those who are assigned in a foreign land with conflict who suffered disability therein will receive additional compensations.

Disability Benefits
The Veterans Advantage provides for the disability compensation programs for honorably discharged veterans with service-related disabilities.
Monthly payments will depend on to the nature of the disability. Seriously disabled veterans, including loss of limb receive additional compensations. Disabled veterans with dependent spouse children, parents or with a seriously disabled wife or husband receive higher.
The Veterans Pension Benefits Program
Low-income veterans of wartime over the age of 65 and those under 65 but is suffering from are eligible for The Veterans Pension Benefits Program.
The following low–income veterans are qualified for the Aid and Attendance and Housebound Benefits program, to wit:
- Severely disabled veterans;
- Those in the nursing homes;
- Blind;
- Unable to perform personal daily functions; and
- Those confined by the disability to the home setting.
Educational Benefits of Post 9/11
The Veterans are provided for tuition, other fees, including board and lodging covered by the Bill.
The GI Bill covers undergraduate courses, graduate courses, technical or vocational courses.
There are certain schools that participate in the “Yellow Ribbon Program”, which provides that additional educational funds will be given for veterans enrolled in courses of study that exceeds the highest in-state tuition.
Other Educational Programs for Veterans and dependents
The Veterans Affairs administers other educational programs, including the Survivors and Dependents Assistance Program for the education of the following beneficiaries to wit:
- children or spouse of a severely disabled veteran,
- a service member missing in action or
- held as a prisoner of war,
- A service member killed in action or currently hospitalized and likely to be declared permanently disabled.
The Veterans Advantage Educational Assistance Program provides that veterans or the dependents must avail the program within 10 years of leaving active duty for eligibility.

V.A. LOAN ELGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS – VETERAN HOME LOANS – VA LOANS FOR 2011
1. Determine Eligibility
•VA guaranteed home loans are an advantage to veterans due to no down payment plus there is no upper limit or cap on the income of the borrower. Since there is no down payment as a security against foreclosure, lenders will receive a certificate of guaranty from the VA. A distinct Veterans Advantage, as gratitude for honorable military service, the government is vouches for the veteran’s trustworthiness to repay this debt.
•To determine eligibility, a military veteran, active duty person, or a member of the national guard or selected reserves, must submit a VA Form 26-1880 (2 pages) (Form is now in a FILLABLE format – but people with Adobe 5.0 seem to have trouble with it) along with proof of service (DD Form 214, a statement of active duty, or proof of participation in the national guard or reserves) to the VA Eligibility Center, P.O. Box 20729, Winston-Salem, NC 27120. Based on the applicant’s length and type of service, VA issues a certificate for each person determined eligible to apply for a VA guaranteed home loan. Check the status after ten days by calling 1 (888) 244-6711 between 8:00 – 4:00 Eastern time.
